Medical insurance coverage pays for your medical expenses. It is, basically, a promise by an insurance company to provide or pay for medical expenses in exchange for payment of premiums. Your contract can be renewable annually or monthly. Broadly speaking, it includes insurance covering disability or long-term nursing or custodial care needs.

It can be obtained through government sponsored social insurance programs or from insurance companies. It can provide coverage to a group of persons or to an individual consumer. The covered group or individual can avail protection from medical insurance by paying the premium. The insured is free to choose the health care provider. The health care provider can seek reimbursement from the insurer.

Coverage is usually obtained through an employer if a person is employed on a full time basis. Others, including self-employed persons, have to arrange for health insurance on their own. They can buy a policy from insurance companies.

The type and amount of medical costs that will be covered are specified in advance. You can exclude expenditures on health insurance from taxable income if you have obtained it from your employer as a benefit of employment.

There are local, federal and state medical insurance plans funded by the United States Government. States also sponsor certain plans. They are offered by each state’s office to its constituents and may be called by different names across different states.

The cost depends on the type of plan, the state of residence, the age and health status of the insured and the benefits. Here are quick ways to attract cheaper rates…

1. There are established name brands in the pharmaceutical industry. If you buy such drugs, your rates will go up. But will you believe it if I told you that all generic drugs are constrained by law to have the exact same percentage of active agents as brand name drugs? Where the dissimilarities start and end are in their choice of inactive ingredients.

The truth remains that you only pay more when you buy an established brand name drug and do NOT get anything more in value. Discuss with your doctor about this.

2. Go for free clinics if you intend to reduce your cost. Such free clinics will cater for simple things like giving you with medical advice, blood pressure checks etc. Clinics like these are normally rendered as community service.

3. Occupations that are seen a hazardous get higher premiums. You can lower your premium if you change to another line of duty that does not expose you to hazards. Because a clerk in a a bookshop isn’t exposed to any health risks like a nuclear plant worker, he or she would get less expensive rates.

4. It is good to look through your policy at least yearly or as often as you think changes have occurred in your health or that of a member of your family. Although you may not really save anything by doing this, you’ll ensure you have enough coverage this way. While doing this routine check you can also notice coverage no longer need.

It is in such cases that you will save by doing this considering that you would do the right thing and drop such unnecessary coverage.Consider a scenario where you still leave your newly-wedded daughter on your family health insurance policy with the consequent higher rates. It may only become obvious when you get your yearly payment notice.

5. The most important key to huge savings in health insurance is comparison shopping — Given that you do it correctly. You can get quotes that will have a difference that exceeds $1,000. You could quickly save so much by simply going with the lowest quote. That should be the case if you’re simply after the lowest price.

Health care and medical costs can take a toll on your savings. Buy a medical insurance immediately to guarantee excellent coverage costs for yourself, your parents and family. Restructuring of earlier Income Tax clauses have brought in a variety of tax savings schemes for you. More and more people have considered saving tax through medical insurance policies as highly beneficial.

The leading names in the insurance industry in India are coming up with attractive tax saving schemes on health insurance as per the new clause under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act of 1961. Last year’s union budget has made more tax saving schemes inclusive of the health insurance policy. The insurance companies like ICICI Lombard, Tata AIG and others guarantee protection of your family and parents through better medical benefits.

Section 80D under the Income Tax Act maintained that you could claim Rs. 15,000 only, as your health insurance coverage. The sum was inclusive of the premium paid for the health insurance of the individual, parents, spouse and children. According to the new declaration by the budget last year, Rs. 15,000 can be claimed for the coverage costs of your family and an additional Rs. 15,000 for your parents. The total amount you can claim amounts to Rs. 30,000. For serious illnesses, you can get a deduction of the premium paid. Medical insurance is just the best policy option for saving tax!
